La Junquera’s main cash crop is cereals such as wheat, oats, barley and rye.
In Spain this term refers to a variety of fruits including raisins and dry figs, as well as nuts and seeds.
Our secondary commercial crop is almonds, which we sell through a local company called Almehendresa. We also have pistachio and walnuts on a much smaller scale.
Part of our experimental agroforestry systems is planting native perennial shrubs between tree lines and on field edges. Thyme, lavender, rosemary and sage have the ability to survive the long dry season, here in the south of Spain, and can be seen growing wild in the hills around La Junquera.
There plants can be sold fresh or dry and can be processed to essential oils.
